Flack,
Just to interject my opinion, I recommend Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, or its Windows 2000 equivalent, Windows 2000 Professional. Much more stable than the consumer versions (95, 98, ME) of these products. Killing recalcitrant applications can be done without occasionally killing OS. On NT4 I can do just about anything that can be done on consumer version except play certain games. These OSes are more difficult to set up but won't crash or hang anywhere near as much.

I believe that NT4 Workstation is cleaner and faster than Windows 2000 Professional.

Reinstalling Microsoft products is a pain in the a$$. Been there, done that.
