You assume people with problems have access to a "legal" source. Good health care is not available to all. Health care (even bad health care) is not available to all. Further, it requires education to utilize any health care system effectively. If you've ever dealt with any mental health system you will know that finding help is difficult. You are lucky indeed if you find it on your first try. Mental illness is very common- especially depression and anxiety disorders. The "challenges of life" are frequently challenges not because of some internal "character flaw" but because of biochemical problems over which the sufferer has no control. A lot of people think of this as a "motivational" problem- but motivation ONLY helps you do things you already have the ability to do. If I say, "Karen, I'll give you a million dollars if you get that temperature of yours down from 102 back to 98.6." You would think I was nuts (I hope). I wouldn't tell you you were escaping the challenges of life by not reducing your temperature. You are ill and you need medicine to reduce your fever- and many people coping with drug and alcohol problems need help also. The substance abuse has an underlying physiological root cause. To call it a character flaw is to blame the victim.
