Corporate Welfare

It's hard for the wife and I to get away from it. They have a re-development agency in Huntington Beach and in Mammoth Lakes, both places where we own property. They're supposed to be for "blighted" areas but instead are used to subsidize projects that bear no relationship to the "highest and best use" of property. Million dollar pieces of property are sold to developers for half the value and projects funded by city-backed loans with who knows what kind of property tax subsidies. Property owners in these RDA's are harassed into either selling or funding their own improvements. The development companies don't want or need another partner besides the city.

We fought a Wal-Mart project that had the city and an elementary school district in collusion on re-zoning a "surplus" school site for lease to George Argyros' Arnel Development. It's like a Shakespeare play in the end with a relative of the City Attorney working for Arnel and several members of the City Council being investigated by the County DA for conflict of interest.

We are cutting our own throat competing for these retail outlets just to provide sales tax revenues. It's a fool's game.

Agree with you also on this . Also Flap add to it that the government pays companies to fire US workers and move their operations oversees. Ain't that a beauty ?. The American worker pays taxes to the government then the government pays companies with that money to get rid of that worker and go to China. Real gratitude. Oh I know lose your home your car your kid's tuition but they will hand you a well fare check. How nice of them.

Hi Flap,

<<While you're at it, address the problem of corporate welfare .... companies that rake in millions of dollars a year in profits but yet wind up paying little or no income tax.>>

In general I have to disagree with you and some my fellow
right wingers. Personally I believe corporations should pay zero in income tax.

<<So while the worthless politicians can point to a new building and X number of jobs and pat themselves on the back, the school district is given the task of educating children of said employees without the benefit of taxing said business.>>
Yes but the employees whose children attend those schools do pay the property tax.
