A secondary effect of the energy shortage in CA...

The elementary school our children attend just informed us that due to the higher cost of energy, they won't be able to keep the Library open, or provide music and art programs next year (I'm getting this secondhand from someone who attended the PTA meeting last night). The funds needed to pay for energy costs will partially come from salaries, and positions will have to be cut. Apparently the Library is required to have an accredited librarian in charge, so we can't even have volunteers (of which we have no shortage at all) run it.

We're lucky in that we live in an area where the parents can often pick up the slack (at the only PTA meeting I attended, one of the parents offered to pay $1500 for a warming oven for the cafeteria out of her own pocket), and I'm sure we'll work out something. I can't imagine how the poorer districts in the state are going to make up the difference.
