Scumbria, <1GB costs about $400. A 900MHz Duron system and 1GB would run about $1K.>

With ECC? With the reliability of a server?

BTW: Just checked PriceWatchItDrop.com, and I found Samsung one gig ECC PC100 DIMMs being sold for $514. Not a bad price, but then again, with those memory prices, you could get four 2-way Itanium boxes w/ 16G of memory each for less money than 64 of your sometimes-reliable Duron boxes.

Scumbria,

re: The processing power of 64 Duron systems would blow away the Merced box.

That's the theory, the reality is most tools haven't been written to run in that mode. Besides that many programs couldn't run in that mode as the Ethernet bottleneck would slow processing to a crawl as oppossed to backplane traffic/communication between cpu's in a single box.

As usual software is further behind (technically speaking) than the hardware, note the lack of apps taking advantage of P4 today.
