As for smallish moral offenses, I'd say cheating on your wife

You consider that a smallish moral offense?

Wow.

I consider it one of the majors. It is fundamentally breaking your solemn commitment to the one person in the world to whom you have voluntarily given the most absolute commitment. It is, IMO, about as serious a moral breach as you can get without physically hurting somebody. I can't think of many offenses (can't offhand think of any, but I'm sure there are some) which don't involve physical harm which I think are morally more serious than cheating on a spouse.
