Sure, I get the metaphor. The problem is, some people have eyes to see and ears to hear, but they are only equiped to see and hear the literal message. So, by using such terminology; you end up with santie claus, sitting on a cloud, weeping over our miserable condition. It just seems that we could keep things on track a little better by avoiding such terminology.
