Neither system particularly appeals to me. A responsible fiat system would be desirable but that's like asking for a enlightened dictatorship.

A currency is valued on faith and perception, or as you more eloquently said that more reflects the economic safety they desire.

Right now the US$ is this basket of security where too many eggs lay. I expect one last hurrah for the Yankee buck as things worsen globally in the next year or so. I am not a gold bug, but for those hoping for $800/oz gold, I believe this will happen but not until we have a new low in the metal first and a new high in the US$ index. That's not to say that we are not on the verge of a major bear market rally in the metal which takes us to $350. I believe that we are. This whole process will take a very long time.

I want my nation's currency to represent our economic and political policies.

If you are American then it evidently does, excess rules.

(no offense to my Yankee brethren of course.)
