u make a good point -- the technology would have to sit on top of that and would have to compete with cable or satellite ... tough hurdle even if they give you the set top box or whatever is required

I go back to my orignal point -- it is not crazy to have huge growth rates year after year for technologies from inception until they become mature.

I find Chambers astonishment at the drop-off in demand to be somewhat absurd or at least very telling about how knowledgeable he is about the business he is in.

So why would Joe use his computer for movies when he has a home theater system with a 4' screen in the next room?

Faulty assumption....

The underlying concept is true broadband to the home...if you have seen the term "Fiber to the Home" or FTTH, that is what they are talking about. It would be a single connection for all of your communications needs. This would include broadcast (what you get via cable or satellite now), data, telephony. The streaming video would be delivered to the television, not to the computer (not that it couldn't be).

With enough bandwidth to the home, it would be cheaper to deliver over the network, rather than via tape or DVD.

This requires a significant infrastructure buildout for the last mile though...ain't gonna happen overnight. But I do believe that it will happen.

Interactive TV will be as big a flop as Web TV and the W2K scare.

Cheers

Not true, they are going after the metro market segment,
that is where the money is...

Streaming video is where GSR 124xx outplays Juniper M160.

I agree. Computers are just a fad for those geeks who like to tinker with electronics. They will never go mainstream. I remember when people were saying this about computers. I remember it because at that time I was building my own for fun and everyone thought it was a geeky thing to do. Now you are saying the same thing about streaming video. Sheesh. I know you are wrong, but yours and other people's lack of imagination really irritates me sometimes. It's so short sighted.

Boy, every generation has doubting thomases like you. When will you doubters ever learn that technology is relentless in its ability to change everything? Now
