The last mile thread has had some good discussions regarding the cost. There are numerous deployments going on right now and I expect as the population demographics change, so will the demands for the internet and bandwidth. (read this as "as old people die off and are replaced with younger people entering the consumer spending population). I consider the home automation thing to be a different topic and not a very promising one at that.
