As a kid, I had a book of 10 years of Annie strips, and I loved it. The reason I brought it up is that I never realized how political Harold Gray was, until I looked at the stuff recently. Man, did he ever hate Socialism with a passion! He killed off Daddy Warbucks in 1945 when he simply couldn't take The New Deal any more. Then, when FDR died, he promptly brought Warbucks back to life. One thing he would preach against in the strip was labor laws, especially child labor laws. One of Gray's big themes was pull oneself up by one's bootstraps. Proof of how powerful a writer he was could be seen in that his strip became extraordinarily popular during the Great Depression, despite preaching a gospel that was diametrically opposed to the public sentiment.
