I knew some people in SDS when I was in high school - this was a SDS group at LSU - turned out later a lot of them were undercover cops and FBI plants. Marek was arguing that "everybody" thought Hitler was a nutball, too, but he came into power anyway. My impression is that Hitler was very charismatic, and appealing. His ideas were not considered nutty back then. The "Final Solution" was not publicly discussed. Hjalmar Schacht, the head of the Reichsbank from 1924-1930, and a founder of the German Democratic Party, started supporting Hitler in 1931, but long before that Hitler had a lot of support among German industrialists. At this point, it's probably hard to tell which of the German industrialists were nutty themselves, but Schacht was no nut. He became disillusioned by Hitler, and wound up being put into a camp, himself, which is one reason he was acquitted at the Nuremberg trials. If you have ever seen Leni Reifenstahl's Triumph of the Will , it's plain as day that Hitler was adored as no US President has ever been. Is it possible for the American people to get suckered into following LaRouche in our hypothetical darkest hour? Not LaRouche. What I foresee as possible is that, in the event of a financial catastrophe like the Great Depression, two candidates could vie for public support - the split between urban voters and rural voters was never more clear than on the famous two colored map of the US showing Gore voters vs. Bush voters. Human nature being what it is, I wouldn't be surprised if the country tilted more to the left - at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a mass movement to throw out recent immigrants, as we see in Germany. Working people are tired of supporting parasites - that's an easy card to throw. Get rid of NAFTA, ditch the WTO, get US out of the UN, establish tariffs, restore US industry, no more trade with China. Someone like Pat Buchanan would fit the bill, and already has quite a bit of support. But I honestly don't think anything like that is going to happen.
