Wind,

Does AMD have any R&D or schedule for 0.70 micron and 0.50 micron technology?

The completed those about 8 years ago.

Re: Intel is planning to use EUV lithography for the 0.05-micron (50-nm) technology node

AMD showed parts manufactured at their submicron development center with 0.05 feature sizes in 1999. They considered that (as best as I can recall) the 0.10 "node" and were evaluating processes to use with their first 180 nanometer stepper which they acquired in 1999.

They were making those test runs 2 years ago. I'm not sure how much, if anything, it really means. Both companies plan to eventually make 100GHZ parts, which is very nice, but not particularly relevant to their performance in the marketplace.

The most telling thing about it is that AMD asks us to consider the next few quarters, while Intel wants to ignore the near term and asks us to instead consider their starry eyed plans for several years from now.

It's that "focus on the future" combined with a dismissal of current and near future needs that got them into the whole Rambus/Merced mess.

Intel seems to have developed this management strategy of clinging to its long term plans regardless of how accurate or inaccurate their forecasts were. When technologies or market behavior fail to develop as Intel had expected 2-3 years earlier, they respond with the agility and speed of a potted plant.

The CPU market is growing much more slowly than expected, and the 180 nm steppers Intel planned to implement are delayed by a half year or more. Is Intel going to put off dumping $7.5 Billion of their remaining cash into new FAB shells? No way! That would clash with plans they made 1 to 2 years ago.

Windsock - Re: "Or will AMD just wait until Intel introduces the technology and copy Intel?"

Probably.
