As you just so elegantly proved, a thermal diode alone is worth ZILCH. You need to actually use it. And as has been stated elsewhere on this thread, the diode doesn't have to be on the processor (although that is marginally better), but BIOS has to support using it.

This can be done equally well with an Athlon or a PIII

(in both cases, the motherboard / BIOS has to support it - in the Athlon case, this includes having a thermal diode located near the processor)
