I learned that here not long ago! I'm thrilled to be able to pass on the information.

The way I found easiest was this:

Boot up your computer. (Click Shut Down, Restart.)

Be sure your speakers are on.

Sit there while it starts up with your finger on the F5 key in the top row.

As soon as you hear the beep, press that key.

You'll go into Safe Mode, and will know it because the monitor screen says so in the corners, and is whitish.

You still have the Start... etc menu to use as you always do.

Someone else will have to answer the more basic question of precisely what the definition of it is.

Good luck.

Bidder, "Safe Mode" loads only the minimum amount of driver support necessary to operate your system (VGA 640x480 for your video adapter)

And generally, I find this being a problem mainly with video adapters as other drivers (printer, modems,.. etc) will usually give error messages, but still permit the O/S to finish loading.

This allows you to be able to troubleshoot Windoze drivers problems that might be prevening the O/S to boot.

Btw, either F5 or F8 will get you to safe mode at the boot-up prompt.
