Dell and EDS Create `One-Stop Shopping' Source for Market-Leading Computer Systems and Services
Companies Expect Joint Offerings to Generate More Than $500 Million in Sales; Seat Management Service Standardizes, Simplifies IT Support for Mid-Size Organizations
AUSTIN & PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 2001-- Dell (Nasdaq:DELL - news) and EDS (NYSE:EDS - news) today announced an alliance to jointly market their products and expertise in the United States as a ``one-stop shopping'' source for computer systems and technology services.

The companies expect the alliance to generate more than $500 million in sales over the next five years.

Under the agreement, Dell will sell its client computer systems combined with EDS services. EDS will expand its use of Dell(tm) PowerEdge(tm) servers and client products in all Dell-based Web hosting opportunities and desktop management service offerings.

The alliance is modeled after the same powerful combination of world-class hardware and IT services that provided a key differentiator in EDS winning a $6.9 billion contract with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps last year. Dell is a member of the EDS-led Information Strike Force team that secured the landmark, desktop computer management contract.

As part of the agreement, the companies announced a pre-packaged seat management service for Dell(tm) Latitude(tm) notebooks, OptiPlex(tm) desktop computer systems and Precision(tm) workstation products targeted at small-to-medium sized enterprises (1,000 to 10,000 employees). The Dell and EDS offering is targeted to customers with multi-vendor environments who are reducing the number of hardware standard providers while continuing to include Dell, or to those who have already largely standardized on Dell platforms.

The offering, which combines Dell products with a comprehensive set of basic services and single-point accountability, can help customers gain the high-quality products, technology deployment and improved service levels at a low cost. Key elements of the offer will leverage EDS' capabilities in end-user help desk service, asset management, hardware maintenance, configuration management and install/move/add/change (IMAC). These services can be combined with a Dell hardware solution for a monthly fee. Additional services, such as training, remote server monitoring and consulting, are also available.

``EDS and Dell now can deliver to customers the same cutting edge package of IT services and hardware developed to meet the demanding criteria set for us by the Navy and Marine Corps,'' said John Wilkerson, vice president of EDS Global Alliances and Indirect Market Strategies. ``By fine tuning hardware requirements to meet the service delivery needs of individual corporate and small-to-medium business clients, we provide a hardware and services combination that is second to none in the marketplace today.''

``Dell's direct relationship with customers provides for an easier way of doing business through a single point of accountability,'' said Jim Merritt, general manager of Dell's global corporate customers segment. ``This alliance extends our model to include not only our customized desktop, workstations and notebook computer systems but also the recognized leadership of EDS' installation, integration, desktop management and support services.''

Joint Marketing Planned By EDS, Dell
Electronic Data Systems and Dell Computer are expected to announce today that they're allying to jointly market their products -- from hardware to hosting and servers to services. Plano-based EDS is one of the nation's biggest computer services companies. Round Rock-based Dell is the world's biggest personal computer company. They say their deal should generate $500 million in sales in the next five years. Executives declined to disclose terms of their alliance or how sales will be split. Last year, the two companies made a joint pitch to the military that landed a $7 billion contract from the Navy and Marine Corps. Hardware companies have been trying to gain a foothold in the services market, which offers better margins. Recently, Hewlett-Packard announced a corporate consulting partnership with Accenture Limited.
