Via Columbia: details emerge

It's 300 and 300 times 2 MHz
Fuad Abazovic, 12 May 2001 17.59 BST

VIA'S COLUMBIA, as you will recall, is Via's new graphic core designed to give some refreshments for the 3D arena.

It will feature a quad pipeline with two texture units and will be DirectX 8 and 9 ready, developed in 0.13 micron technology.

The big news is that the DDR 128 bit RAM that we believe cards using this technology will work at 600MHz (2 times 300MHz).

This kind of fast memory was introduced from Infineon and by some other Dramurai in the last few months.

Documents we have seen show that Via is definitely striking at the high end of the graphics market and will put severe pressure on Nvidia-Graphzilla, ATI, PowerVR and others who are fighting for the crown.
