The advantage of Itanium, and any other 64 bit CPU, is less based on its speed performing standard benchmarks, and more its ability to address large contiguous files > 2^32 bits in length. The same would also apply to its ability to handle integers that are 64 bits in length as well. It is why it will show different performance depending on the benchmark one uses.

To anyone who has had to program 16/32 bit arithmetic on an 8 bit CPU, you can see how much of an advantage that could be.
