Eva Jina,

Gore knows Elian pushed it over the top for Bush

Scalia pushed it over the top for Bush.

Janet Reno storm-troopers will force you to car pool

Do you right wingers ever reflect on how many different unrelated issues you are confusing at the same time? Your words wreak of delusional paranoia.

The Elian affair is a perfect example of how ill-prepared the left is to capture the Hispanic vote. The Clinton administration's insensitive and ham-handed handling of the Cuban child's quest for freedom reflects many of the left's age-old shortcomings (treason, lack of respect for freedom, arrogance of power) but its most profound effect was to cost Gore thousands of Cuban votes in Florida.

There is no indication, nationwide, that the left either recognizes or knows how to deal with the rapidly-rising Hispanic middle class, whose long-run tendencies are to vote for liberty over government smothering and intrusions.

The next big blunder by the left will be to fight tooth and nail against Bush's relatively conservative Hispanic judicial nominees. If they Bork one, it may well cost them hundreds of thousands of votes in the 2002 elections. Fortunately for us-and as Elian proved-they ain't got a clue...
