Well, if you recall, the US government bought all that land from France back in 1803, so it's misleading to imply that the public lands were taken away from anyone, except the Indians. What people out west object to, apparently, is the US designating some of the public lands permanently off limits, e.g., Clinton's controversial executive order designating the land around the Kaiwoporwits coal reserves in Utah into a National park.

This is one of those "hot button" issues that gets kicked around quite a bit on the political threads. I side with the environmentalists on this one but am not up for a knock-down drag-out argument. It's Mother's Day, and I am taking my mother to the National Arboretum.:)
