kirk, personally, i would rather have great parents and a crappy school than the other way around.

however, many, many kids have crappy parents through no fault of their own. the private school / public school spending data presented by another poster is anywhere close to being universally true than the administrators of said funds ought to be in jail, imho.

there is no simple solution to this extremely complex problem.

Not that it's the entire story, but you have to remember that many "refugees" were from upper middle class backgrounds. They may have ended up running small stores and doing menial work in the US but they started off being teachers, publishers, business people, etc. in their original country.

As they say, it's not your circumstances but how you view your circumstances (and consequently what you do about them) that matters. That said, there is something wrong with the learned helplessness of multi generational handouts.

I still vote for a booming economy which will float all boats! What happened to discussions about the market on this thread, who's responsible for this philosophical/political debate? :)
