Hmmmm, looks like the race went to the swift (note past tense) like Global Crossing or QWest, leaving investors in RCN Corp or Level3 or TSIX holding junk (bonds). While I'm sure each company is a somewhat different story, see an overview at thestreet.com

My reference to Northpoint's central office footprint being a monetizable asset, was not in reference to DSL itself, but rather to the asset value of holding leases on space inside many of the Bell CO buildings (which the Bell's had fought against tooth and nail). This is the same concept as Radio Shack's value being not the Radio Shack business of selling electronics, but rather Radio Shack's ownership of a nationwide network of retail stores.
