They are obliged to maintain that, in the end, people are redeemed through Christ. However, in acknowledging that people can be saved outside the Church, and that other traditions might have truth to offer, even if not as complete as the teachings of the Church, they have come a long way.

Since Krishna didn't die for anyone's sins, the context and doctrinal content would seem to belie the idea of "theft". Similarly with Buddha. The most one could claim is remote influence.

It may be that Christianity played the role you say, and merely captivated men's minds for the benefit of the few. Or it may be that, in the mix of things, it humanized an Empire and brought barbarian tribes to a more exalted conception of civilization, in the end inspiring progress. History is a complex tale. I am too tired at the moment to argue the point. But for those of us who tend to believe in Providence, it is hard to believe that God would have allowed Christianity to prevail for so long unless it served a worthwhile purpose over all......
