Gartner Expects Gloomy Global Chip Market in 2001

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Global semiconductor revenue grew by a record 32.5 percent to $226 billion
in 2000 but the outlook for the industry this year is gloomy, research company Gartner Dataquest said
on Monday.

Gartner believes the industry will exit 2001 at $188 billion, a 16.7 percent decline in revenue from the
lofty levels of 2000.

Worldwide semiconductor revenue in 1999 was $170.7 billion.

Slow global recovery is anticipated in 2002 with revenues growing 13.2 percent to $213 billion, it said in a statement.

In the Asia Pacific region, the semiconductor market grew 33.1 percent in 2000 and achieved revenues of $57 billion. It continued to be
the second largest chip-consuming region after North America last year.

Gartner did not provide 2001 revenue estimates for the Asia Pacific region.

Singapore's semiconductor market grew 31.7 percent in 2000 to reach $8 billion in revenues with most manufacturers turning an impressive
performance.

The city-states's semiconductor market is expected to decline 12.3 percent to $7.1 billion in 2001, Gartner said.
