Neither. I assert the following:

1. "The original idea of the SDRAM is based on the basic principles of . . . the complex RAMBUS structure. NEC (RAMBUS license holder) was the first to suggest a leaner "public domain" version. . ."

2. "In the meantime, it has become clear that a RAMBUS memory can easily be converted into a SDRAM..."

3. "Alternatives: Make It Public Domain - Join SYNC DRAM!!!"

4. "One day, all computers will be built like this, but hopefully without the royalties going to RAMBUS."

Eric,

This is a repost of count of patents issued to the players in this drama. I added a couple to it.

Count of patents :
From the following link, I tried to get a count of patents owned by assignee granted to some of the players in this.
delphion.com

Here's what I got from searches of Assignee :
Rambus : 115
Infineon (new company) : 170
Siemens (Infineon's parent) : 16,841
Micron : 5229
Samsung : 8866
Hyundai : 2070
Intel : 4511
Intergraph : 90 (enough to cause intel grief)
International Business Machines : 29814

Hitachi 24673
NEC 15797

I don't know what is it about the rmbs patents that made them superior to everybody else. It is possible, but again, I am not a patent expert.
