SAN FRANCISCO -- The war on cancer is shifting to a major new battlefield where a multitude of compounds hold the promise of transforming the treatment of one of medicine's deadliest diseases.

At the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, which opened here over the weekend, researchers are presenting studies on a new generation of treatments that block the biochemical switches that cause normal cells to turn cancerous.
