Jane Swift, very pregnant with twins and running the state's business from her Boston hospital bed. The all-Democrat Governor's Council, an elected board that approves judicial appointments, voted 5-3 Wednesday to ask the state Supreme Judicial Court if it is constitutional for Swift to conduct official meetings by telephone, the Associated Press reported Thursday. Dems want to force Swift to hand authority over to Democrat Secretary of State William Galvin, who is next in the line of succession. Forget it, she says. Women are appalled by the those intolerant Democrat white males who wanted to overthrow Swift. ``This is a grave situation. She is flat on her back. Why is providing these accommodations to a pregnant worker causing such a ruckus?'' wondered council member Mary Ellen Manning. One of Swift's most vocal critics was council member Edward O'Brien, father of state Treasurer Shannon O'Brien. ``From my point of view, we should be doing everything we can to accommodate her,'' said Shannon O'Brien, who gave birth to a baby girl during her first year in office. Republican National Committee co-chairman Ann Wagner skewered the council's intolerance. ``This is totally out of line and an insult to working moms all across the country,'' she said. ``I wonder if they would be complaining if the governor was a man recovering from prostate cancer surgery.'' Now red-faced Dems, aware they are looking like sexist pigs, are fumbling for damage control. ''I disassociate myself from any Democrat looking to make political capital at the governor's expense,'' former party chairman Steve Grossman, a candidate for governor next year, told today's Boston Globe. ''I not only think it's a political mistake, I think it's an outrageous and misguided effort to question her capacity to govern and to make political hay that can only backfire.'' Edward O'Brien was on the defensive. ''I would be doing this regardless of whether the governor was a Democrat or a Republican,'' he claimed. ''And this has nothing to do with gender." Tell that to the first pregnant male governor, Eddie - or should we say Teddy?
