Greenspan's freedom to inflate is limited by two factors -- the bond market and the currency market. If either of these refuse to cooperate the cure could be worse than the disease.

So far the currency markets are cooperating extremely well. The dollar has rallied as short-term rates have plunged.

But the bond market is starting to balk. Long bond yields have risen sharply and are not far below 6%. Further big increases in bond yields would gravely damage the housing market.
