Chip-Making Device Orders Soar 34.8% In FY2000
Tuesday, May 15, 2001
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Orders for chip-making devices made in Japan, including exports, soared 34.8% on the year to a record 1.96 trillion yen in value in the fiscal year ended March, the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) reported Monday.

But orders slipped 6% in the second fiscal half, and industry watchers believe that this fiscal year orders will post the first year-on-year decline in three years.

Fiscal 2000 orders of wafer-processing devices, including steppers, surged 42.2% to 1.36 trillion yen, and boosted the total figure. Orders began marking year-on-year declines since January 2001 and dropped 48.1% on the year to 88.46 billion yen in March. Wafer-processing devices plunged 50.2% that month.

Japan's chip-making device market, including imports, grew 57.7% to 1.13 trillion yen last fiscal year. But in March alone, the market shrank by 38.1% to 59.26 billion yen.
