Cable & Wireless to Buy Digital Island for $340 Mln (Update3)
By Daniel Tilles

London, May 14 (Bloomberg) -- Cable & Wireless Plc, owner of the
third-largest network for Internet service providers, agreed to buy
Digital Island Inc. for $340 million in cash and assumed debt to
manage Web sites for more multinational customers.

Cable & Wireless said it will pay $3.40 for each Digital Island share,
or 8.6 percent more than the San Francisco-based company's
closing price Friday. It will assume $49 million in net debt.

The London-based company, which will announce full-year earnings
this week, has been expanding into Web site management to offset
declining prices for carrying data and voice traffic in Japan and the
U.S. Digital Island offers a range of Internet services to customers
such as Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp.

Analysts have said Cable & Wireless will be under pressure to
return some of its estimated 3 billion pounds ($4.2 billion) of cash to
shareholders if it doesn't make major acquisitions.
