In Canada, the particular cable ISP I'm with doesn't really care what you do with it. Router, hubs/switches, wireless 802.11B access points. Anything goes for the same monthly price, but they all share the same internet bandwidth.

There is even a option to get a permanent fixed IP address for a few bucks more a month.

As for download speeds. The fastest I've seen is 400KByte/s (roughly 3.2Mbit/s) for my home machine but only from one site. The residential ADSL here typically does 384Kbit/s.

I don't know if the telcos will beat the cablecos here, but everyone seems to be betting on DSL winning this one. I have no complaints so far.
