Eric,

Don't forget about HP and HPUX 11.0i

A "couple" of very critical large memory applications will be running on Itanium right from the start.

predictions for Aries: a
smooth migration to Itaniumâ„¢

If you are already using PA-RISC, a move to Itaniumâ„¢ is almost seamless. Not only does it run the most current version of our enterprise class HP-UX operating system, but it has complete backwards compatibility with your 32-bit and 64-bit PA-RISC applications and data sets.
No other company introducing Itaniumâ„¢ systems is able to offer anything like this level of backwards compatibility with their own strategic enterprise operating systems. Being a co-inventor of a new architecture has some very definite benefits.

Totally Clueless - Re: "In fact, it's kind of pathetic if Intel and friends have not gotten around to testing at least a few thousand of the tens of thousands of existing windows apps for compatibility."

AMD depends on existing Windows applications - but only an idiot - such as yourself - would ever think that the ITanium was built to run todays exiting applications.

Intel has tens of thousands of applications running on 2-way, 4-way, 8-way, 16 and 32-way XEONS today. (AMD has ZERO !)

The ITanium - in case you didn't know - is a 64 bit processor - requiring NEW, 64 bit code and OSs.

Better pull your head out from your lowest orifice. You're starting to smell - as well as think - like a mushroom.
