I wouldn't want to claim that dependence is in a nations best interest.

Interdependence may be, yet that assumes a shared reality between participants that may be difficult given cultural circumstances.

regarding the maintenance time- I think it's currently overlooked that once the credit quality issue came up, late last year, withholding supply became a constant issue. At least several weeks ago, Qualified Facilities shutdown 3000 Megawatts of production due to non-payment. This happens to be some of the best power from an environmental perspective, wind/geothermal etc. This certainly aggravates the current situation.

I heard (from this thread?) that this situation may be about to replay in other areas of the US- was it Mirant that was taking unplanned downtime- oh yeah- letting stored supplies of coal drop during a period when shipping constraints are already a concern.

Ah well, as long as I have a vegetable garden, I'm assured of at least some food...

<this country is nuts if we put our food supply in the hands of foreigners. they will act in their self interest and we will cry "daddy" just like we are crying "daddy" to the electric execs now. except it will be much worse and getting rich will not be our food suppliers' only agenda.>

Yet we constantly whine that Japan and Europe won't do that same.
