Yup, gloom and doom....I'll bet you said the same thing in 1973 when the popular press was claiming we would run out of oil in 10 years too.

Paying off the debt.

The CA State Budget was $46.1 billion in 95-96. Five years later it is $86.8 billion ('00-'01) having nearly doubled. Budget surpluses totaled over $20 billion and not one word about paying bonds off early. Despite all these surpluses, school districts all over the state were trying to pass bonds, and initiatives were voted on to reduce the majorities for passing these new school bonds.

The State Budget is nearly double the 5% per capita of the '60's (Gov. Moonbeam) which is even more evidence that politicians will not restrain spending when the revenues keep growing. Only reducing taxes has any effect on their mindset in the long run.

Now if government showed they could reduce 50%, I might join you in paying off the debt, but not until then. The tax and spend addicts need to be rehabilitated.
