The contracts to build the network, with a first-phase capacity of 15.15 million subscribers, were awarded to joint ventures including Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Nortel Networks and Ericsson. Chinese firms awarded contracts were Shanghai Bell, Zhongxing Telecom, Datang, Huawei, Eastern Communications and Jinpeng. Several Chinese and foreign telecoms gear makers were left hanging last month when China Unicom cancelled a signing ceremony for mobile networks around China. China Unicom said in March it would spend 20 billion yuan (US$2.42 billion) on building CDMA networks in China capable of handling 13 million subscribers. Ericsson said it had signed contracts worth more than US$200 million with China Unicom to supply infrastructure in seven provinces. It said in a statement it would help China Unicom roll out its nationwide CDMA telecoms network. The CDMA network can carry more data than the existing global system for mobile communications (GSM) network. Ericsson's technology will be installed in the Jiangsu, Anhui, Sichuan, Yunnan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Henan provinces. Work would start immediately and all networks were expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of this year, laying a solid foundation for China's migration to third-generation (3G) mobile telephony, Ericsson said. "China is one of the world's fastest growing telecommunications markets and Ericsson is pleased to further strengthen our market leadership in China," the firm said. Ericsson's Nanjing Ericsson Panda Communications Company joint venture will deliver the contracts, which include compact radio base stations, base station controllers, mobile switching centres, home location registers and services including network management, training, rollout and support. Earlier on Tuesday, Ericsson said it had been chosen by Dutch telecoms operator KPN Telecom NV to upgrade its German network. That upgrade will allow KPN to offer high-quality voice telephony in addition to fast Internet access through the same line, Ericsson said in a separate statement. technology.scmp.com Ibexx
