>>the best interests of the nation as a whole<<

Wow! Breath-taking audacity. Thanks for posting that, sometimes I wonder whether I am fighting straw men, so a reality check is helpful..;^)

I don't doubt for a moment that you believe you know what "the best interests of the nation as a whole" is, too.-g-

>>>The key to any regulated system is INTELLIGENT regulation.

and

Just look at the appointees to regulatory agencies, such as the EPA and the Dept. of Energy, and you will see why, regardless of whether you favor regulation or deregulation, the Administration is doing exactly the opposite of what it should be doing to ensure it acts in the best interests of the nation as a whole.<<<

Well agreed.

I'm not sure which Administration (s) you're refering to above. With this current Administration I think we can know what to expect. The recent appointment of Pitt to the SEC is no doubt a clue as to what other regulatory appointments have been like.

A standing regulatory body, even though it may be jammed with bad appointees for a time, is still a users/consumers best bet long term. Adminstrations come and go. Waiting them out is the key.

Kahn and Stigler are correct in that the bias will always favor the industry to a degree. But I've seen regulatory bodies act responsibly with the right mix of industry and consumer reps. The integrity of the individuals involved on both sides was key factor. Of course you need a good executive making the appointments to begin with.
