Short version is this:

Alan Sokal is a physicist who submitted an article parodying postmodernism to a prominent postmodern publication called "The Social Text". The article, entitled "Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity", was full of absurdities, contradictions, bad references, etc.

The Social Text published the article as a serious piece. After exposing the article as a parody, Alan Sokal got alot of attention and acquired a pulpit from which to rail against postmodernism.
