I would not go so far as to attribute those thoughts to Tate. However, I agree with you that inventors invent because they can and they want to and are not simply or exclusively motivated by the profit motive. Farmwald and Horowitz are cases in point.

Also, I know Zeev Hed does not invent for profit either.
I heard a rumor that he lives in a cardboard box under an overpass. <G>
