Pat, Ashcroft, as Attorney General, has not performed any functions on a Chaplain, nor has he conducted any religious services on government property. If he wants to say a prayer, in his private office in DC, in private, that is his right. He has made no effort to force anyone to perform in the manner of any religion, but has done an admirable job of performing the job description of the Attorney General of the United States of America.

How in the world are religious rights protected by outlawing them?

We may someday have a Moslem, Hindu or Buddhist as AG.

Yes and they could have prayer services on public property too under the well defined rules.

A pious Muslim would have to pray in his office, since he is to pray facing Mecca several times a day. A pious Jew has various obligatory brukhas, or blessings, to say in the course of the day, especially at meal time. A pious Hindu would likely feel the need for an idol of Ganesha, the elephantine God of Fortune, in his office, perhaps with an occasional small offering. A pious Buddhist might very well think nothing of having a statue of the Boddhisattva Amitabha, the Compassionate One. In the real world, people do not make a sharp distinction and hide their faith away......

<< I don't care what people do on their own time.......it's when they are in an official gov't capacity they should adhere to their job description. >>

Aren't you one of the people who called the Monica affair... "private"?
