My definition for heat limited vs speed path limited is that a CPU is heat limited, if by lowering the die temoerature, you can go faster even if you need more voltage. A speed path limited CPU would not go faster with lower die temperatures. Now both effects can be seen where speed increases to a point, where further cooling does not increase speed. P3, P4, Tbird, and A4 all show this tendency for lower die temp means higher stable speed. Thus, they are all heat limited. Thus, to gauge top speed, one needs to specify max die temp. P3 on 0.18 Al., started to reduce max die temp to get to 933 from 866. P3-1G reduced it more. When some die change was introduced (a die shrink was claimed by some), P3-933 was able to get to max die back to the old value, but P3-1G was not back there yet. The equivalent is not happened to Tbird, yet!

All one has to do is keep the die cooler. My Tbird can go to 1.5GHz when I cool it down (either by lower case temps or by a better cooler). 75MHz additional requires a die 5C cooler by my testing.

I hope that cleans up a definition misunderstanding.
