Chip Revenues To Fall 16% This Year, Report Says
Electronic News -- 5/15/01 11:20:00 AM

The semiconductor industry is expected to see worldwide revenues fall nearly 16 percent to $170 billion in 2001, according to a new report from Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Cahners In-Stat Group. This is a significant drop from 2000’s growth of 36.8 percent to a record $204.4 billion.
Early quarters are showing a significant sequential downturn, but recovery is expected to begin in the second half of this year as inventories are worked off, the company said.

“Even though growth in 2001 was bound to be lower, the overall economic slowdown and crash of the dot-coms has caused the semiconductor slowdown to occur sooner and more abruptly than previously expected,” said Steve Cullen, director of In-Stat’s semiconductor group, in a statement. “Instead of slower growth, we expect a reversal of direction in 2001 with worldwide semiconductor revenues falling by 15.8 percent to $170 billion.”

In-Stat predicts the industry’s recovery will be as fast as the decline, which companies responded to with an abrupt reduction in capital spending in an attempt to minimize an inventory glut.

“Although the sales growth of key end products including PCs, cell phones and networking hardware has slowed, most of these segments will exhibit some unit growth in 2001,” Cullen said. “However enough of the unit growth will be satisfied by existing inventory that semiconductor unit growth is also expected to decline, by 10.8 percent to 333 billion.”

Average selling prices for chips are expected to fall by 5.7 percent this year to about 52 cents, as capacity exceeds demand for most part types. In-Stat believes 2002 will see a return to both unit and revenue growth with more normal growth patterns by 2003.

In-Stat's parent company also owns Electronic News.

kg4, most people resort to resumes when their ideas don't stand on their own. if the idea is good, why is anything else required? i can see why he posts his resume given the quality of ideas he espouses.

I'm glad you know better than I how I handled my account........ actually, you continue to support what I've already said........ you don't need to worry about trivial things like facts or credible evidence to draw your conclusions........ yet you know damn well you are right........ all the time...... what you can't see is that you project your own critical flaws on those who have differing POV's.

You just don't get it.

Um....... have you noticed you mention my resume far more frequently than I do..... Oh, & how could you retire on the 4 or 5 bucks you'd get if you got $1 for every time I bring it up? FWIW, you can check to verify........ I've done it twice on this thread to give some context to my POV....... no more, no less....... IMO, you make such a big deal of it yourself that it helps you justify your flawed POV about it.

Oh, RE: the Jagr/Lemieux squabble...... I'm glad you found our discussion so amusing. FWIW, those silly awards & useless statistics only provided support for my POV that Jagr is currently the best hockey player on the planet..... Winning scoring titles, being voted MVP of the league several times by the media & also by the players themselves tends to give an indication of his abilities....... And since Fuzzy's POV was that Jagr wasn't even in the top 20...... we asked him to provide his list for the top 20 so we could discuss it further........ Oh & those career statistics I posted about Jagr were clear evidence of his offensive & defensive abilities....... IMO, at this stage of his career, Jagr's stats & awards earned would be the envy of almost any player ever to play the game...... btw, that disappearing act in the playoffs..... was due to a severe shoulder injury & he is back playing a good game with the injury...... and your comments you attributed to Mario Lemieux were completely wrong. I saw the actual interview with Lemieux that the media tried to hype into something it wasn't........ Mario Lemieux's most stinging words were something like he (Jagr) should really be happy right now (because they were doing well in the playoffs) when a reporter tried to imply Jagr was pouting or upset after the game......... it ended up being a non-event & even Jagr had fun with it the very next day in front of the cameras............ where he discussed the seriousness of his injury...... which was what caused the whole media frenzy in the first place......

"I personally could care less. "

ROTFLMAO! Do you ever read what you have written before you hit the send key? You beat that subject to death, albeit quite inaccurately.......... However, as is your habit, you spoke as though you knew for certain I was completely wrong..... when you had almost no personal knowledge of the facts........ in fact you made light of the facts I presented as though they meant nothing!!!!!

HELLO!! IS THERE ANYONE IN THERE!!!

GYFHOOYA!!!!!!

And I'm certain you still think you are right!
