Central station power is cheaper than decentralized. Period. Unless you can get something that beats the economies of scale -- you are simply increasing overall costs.

My point was that a customer by installing these things may avoid reduce costs to themselves even though overall, the thing is uneconomic. Your rate contains fixed costs. When you install a thing-a-ma-jig instead of using the utlity's supply -- those fixed costs have not been avoided -- you've just forced someone to spread them over fewer kWh.

Also, wind is usually it's strongest Off-peak -- it does little to help peak requirements. We've looked at wind farms in KS and OK -- they just don't pay -- not being dispatchable is a big part of it. They are expensive and offer energy only when it is relatively speaking, cheap to buy. Other locales may be different ...

For all the worry -- central station service is in fact highly reliable absent letting idiots do the planning.
