Seriously, I can't see that far ahead ... not sure anybody can. But while fuel remains that can burned or some other way be converted to electricity, central station power will likely be cost-effective --

If it isn't and something comes along that can provide our energy needs without such economies of scale -- well, that would really be transforming -- but I think it isn't likely.

I've heard estimates that say we have at least 150 - 200 years worth of coal left including growth in consumption. I think for oil and nat gas the estimates are 50 - 75 years. Scarcity and higher prices will inspire someone --

Regarding our current electric system:

were our ancestors wrong in leaving us this legacy?
