I won't dispute that there are some pretty big egos in the scientific world, and (some of) their livelihoods depend on their ability to maintain funding. But to suggest that the peer review process is a worldwide racket whereby peers get to help each other guarantee funding on wild-eyed projects is just a little bit far-fetched. In any case, what they have to gain is a meer pittance compared to how much the global energy cartels have to lose. Muddying the science is their answer.
