Rohm Co. Ltd., Kyoto, Japan, Tuesday filed a motion with the U.S. International Trade Commission to withdraw its patent infringement case against Nichia Corp., also of Japan, involving LED displays.

Noboru Tazaki, general manager of Nichia Optoelectronics Products division, said the end of the Rohm suit at the ITC "eliminates concern over the availability of violet and blue laser diodes in the U.S."

Nichia claimed it is one of the few producers of indium gallium nitride LED lasers able to produce blue and violet colors in displays.

Rohm filed its patent infringement case against Nichia at the ITC five months ago, seeking to bar imports of the competitor's LEDs into the U.S. Nichia had filed briefs with the ITC alleging the Rohm patents were unenforceable due to antitrust behavior. That charge had not been addressed in the ITC litigation before Rohm asked to withdraw its complaint.
