DMA,

Two things happened in the 1980's to drive me out of geology.

1. The Iran-Iraq war caused those countries to start dumping oil, which drastically lowered oil prices. This killed the exploration industry in the US, and sent places like Denver and Houston into a depression.

2. R&D funding was killed by the Reagan administration, which meant that interesting projects like oil-shale, volcanoes and paleontology were decimated.
