Alcatel underwater business may be hit this year Wednesday May 16, 7:46 am Eastern Time PARIS, May 16 (Reuters) - Alcatel said on Wednesday a decision by Canada's 360networks (Toronto:TSX.TO - news) to scale back its construction schedule could hit the French telecom equipment maker's results significantly in its underwater division. ``If the contracts don't come through in 2001, it will have a significiant impact on results at our underwater division,'' an Alcatel spokesman said. Alcatel declined to give a detailed breakdown of the contribution of the underwater division to its results. Shares in Alcatel, one of the chief suppliers to 360networks, plunged over six percent on Wednesday after the networks manufacturer said it was scaling back two major projects to help reduce capital expenditure by over $1 billion this year. biz.yahoo.com
