GPRS requires costly non-standard routers to patch packet data defficiencies.

<<< why are they needed >>>

GPRS needs two proprietary protocols in its packet data services, one is SNDCP, which is used to
multiplex multiple PDP simultaneously used by on connection, the other is LLC, which is to maintain
the logical link between MS and SGSN. So for SGSN to work properly, the router got to have the
special ability to handle those.

In contrast, 1x is using ppp as its logical link layer protocol for the connection between the handset
and the PDSN router, therefore nothing special is needed.

The reason LLC and SNDCP is needed is purely out of GSM's inability to handle packet data
therefore you need all kind of patch and tweak to try to make it work. On the other hand, CDMA, via
IS-707, has a much more elegant way in handling the packet data service.

BT seems to be getting the message. I would not be surprised to see BT or other operators sue the governments to recoup the wasted spectrum dedicated to 3G. You don't coerce wireless companies to pay 5 billion pounds to pay for 3G spectrum for an application to work without serious risks. The governments throughout Europe must be shitting themselves if they think they can keep the excessive 3G spectrum fees.

Jacob's and company are really in a position to pitch 1Xrtt to Bellsouth and SBC's Cingular consortium in the US. There is almost no way that BLS is going to migrate to a GPRS/WCDMA platform given the frustrations in Japan and Europe with WCDMA. It's getting exceedingly difficult for anyone to demonstrate the viability of GPRS as a bridge to WCDMA. It will be interesting to see the reaction to CDG's White Papers on the migration of TDMA networks to 1X in a few weeks.

3 things really highlight the problems with GPRS route to WCDMA.

- asynchronous handoff cannot manage soft handoffs
- higher chip speeds create excessive SAR limits, thereby reducing data throughput
- lack of commercial ASIC's
