TO SIGNIST:

Since you favored us with a mathematical story, a few days back, on this largely sunny MRVC day I will add a CULTURAL DIFFERENCES STORY, revolving around the meaning of the phrase "savoire-faire", composed, (for those of you not French-speaking) of two infinitives:

savoire= to know, understand
faire = to do or to make

An American, Englishman and Frenchman in a Parisian cafe are discussing the meaning of the phrase "savoire-faire".

AMERICAN: Well, you know, I work hard all day, come home,
pop a beer, hear a funny sound in the bedroom, open the
door quickly----MY WIFE IN BED WITH ANOTHER MAN! I say:
"Bonjour, I am putting a Domino's Pizza in the oven, ready in 20 minutes tops", and walk out of the room."

ENGLISHMAN: WELL DONE, old chap, but not quite it. I, too put in a busy day at the office, enter my abode in a happy mood, hear low voices and moans in the adjoining room, open
the door abruptly---MY WIFE IN BED WITH ANOTHER MAN! I say,
"Bonjour, comment ca va? Pardonnez moi! I am on my way to an important appointment--but will be back in 2 hours" and walk out of the room. That is TRUE savoire-faire!

FRENCHMAN: Good try, mes amis, mais pas exactamente!
I toil the whole day through. Come home. Quietly sip an
aperitif on the balcony, when I hear savage sounds from the
bedroom. I open the door--MY WIFE IN BED WITH ANOTHER MAN!
I say:
" Bonjour! Comment ca va? CONTINUEZ!" and walk out of the
room.

and if that man CAN continuez, HE has savoire-faire!

Namaste!
Jim
