OT-Turku:

Turku in finnish comes from "market square",
while the swedish name Åbo, literally
means Å = slow running river, bo = a place where one lives.

Turku is probably the oldest town in Finland, the capital
during the swedish time, 1200 to 1809, medieval
stuff, etc although much is gone because of a couple
of major fires. (Helsinki became the capital during
the russian time 1809-1917, plans made by Alexander
the Great, typical renaissance architecture, earlier very
small town)

That is, Turku "looks and feels" different, although also
a harbor plus the river. One can still see parts of a
black scorched wall on the "castle" (1280,1556) from one
minor swedish-finland revolt from 1599??

The other major medieval monument in Turku is the castle, started in the 1310's. The castle acted as the main castle of Finland in
the middle ages and renaissance and experienced it's best days in the 16th century when the duke of Finland, Johan, held his court
there together with the Polish-born princess Katarina Jagellonica whom he married in 1562. Later, in 1568, Johan imprisoned his
brother, the mad renaissance king Erik XIV, and he was held prisoner in Turku castle. It's an impressive construction, but perhaps
not exceptionally romantic. In the river Aura, there are two 19th century sailingships that act as museums, the Suomen Joutsen and
Sigyn. The Cloister Hill (Luostarinmäki) has an attractive collection of simple wooden merchants houses that were spared from the
fire of 1827.

Turku has also been the university town from back in 1640,
more non-engineering, unluckily not for electronics,
telecom although Salo, where mobile phones started, is
closeby.

The best part of Turku is outside Turku, the archipelago,
thousands of islands (Helsinki has much less)

A day cruise to small, old wooden town Naantali (the valley
of mercy, where finns where killed or baptized..?) on the
Steamship S/S Ukkopekka should be OK with kids.

The sexiest thing is obviously the smooth, round red granite
rocks (smoothed by iceage) at the waterfronts,
rythmically flushed by warm waves during the long summer
sunsets..
